Inspired by the earliest work in the exhibition The Story Unfolds in Istanbul – Bertrand de La Borderie’s 1547 poetic love letter – this workshop explores the visual and material world of 16th-century Istanbul. Drawing on the book’s cover design, interior details, marbled papers, and the replica şemse motif, participants will create their own handmade bindings.
Led by Osman Ömer Doruk and Merve Midilli of the Istanbul Bookbinding Institute, the workshop introduces the historical development of bookbinding, material culture, and fundamental binding techniques. Following the presentation and demonstrations, each participant will produce a unique, handcrafted book cover.
