The exhibition book for I-You-They: A Century of Artist Women, realized under the patronage of Çiğdem Simavi and sponsored by Ünlü & Co is published in two volumes for Turkish and English languages. The publication accompanies the exhibition that features a selection of works by artist women who lived and worked in Turkey between roughly the 1850s and 1950s. It further invites alternative histories to be written by recognizing each and every one of these women overlooked and neglected by linear art history.
The book starts with forewords by Çiğdem Simavi and Esra Koç, followed by exhibition’s curator Deniz Artun’s text titled “I’s in Their Eyes” explaining the conceptual framework in detail. The main body of the book presents images of 232 works by 117 artists. The book closes with the section “We” with a text by Şeyda Çetin and Ebru Esra Satıcı, the curatorial studies and research team, titled “While Searching for ‘We’” that is an introduction to more than 100 ephemeral materials about the exhibition artists. The 400-page publication sheds light on this “century” presented to these women.
